US Open - Fines

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Friday, September 18, 2009, In : US Open

$31,500 – that’s the total amount of fines being collected at the 2009 US Open according to tournament spokesman Chris Widmaier.

The majority of this is obviously covered by the $10,000 fine incurred by Serena Williams for unsportsmanlike conduct for abusing a line judge during her semi-final loss to Kim Clijsters.  Williams was also fined $500 for racquet abuse during the same match.

This amount is only 3% of her prize money for reaching the Semi-finals.  However, the fine coul...

Wimbledon - Day 5 Wrap

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Sunday, June 28, 2009, In : Wimbledon

Roger Federer dropped a set and it didn’t rain on Wimbledon Day 5. The rain had been forecast, the dropped set had not.

At the start of the day, the weather forecast had predicted a 40% chance of heavy rain. But few people would have expected Philipp Kohlschreiber to get anything from his match against Federer given that he had lost in straight sets to the Swiss in three previous meetings.

There was not a drop of rain but Kohlschreiber gave Federer a contest 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1.

Wimbledon - Day 1 Wrap

Day One of the 123rd Wimbledon Championships – and it was a disaster. Well, it was if you had just spent a fortune on a new roof for the Centre Court. So, what sort of weather did we have on the dawn of the brave new age of life with a roof? Sunshine, a few clouds and hours and hours of uninterrupted play. Not a drop of rain to be seen. Rats! The roof will have to wait for another day.

Other than that, Day One could not have been better. The brand-spanking new No.2 Court was opened by th...
