US Open - Quotes

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Thursday, September 17, 2009, In : US Open

These may not be the big stories of a US Open that had a Wildcard winning the women’s competition and a 5 set men’s final that saw Federer lose his crown, was witness to Serena losing her cool and for the only the 6th time in it’s history did not have and American in either singles final.

But these tennis players that are know for being intense and focused have to face the press.  Then there seems to be a new competition - which journalist can come up with the most bizarre question.  B...

US Open Men - Day 3

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Thursday, September 3, 2009, In : US Open

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were in good form as both enjoyed straight-sets wins at the US Open on Wednesday.

World number three Nadal swept past Richard Gasquet in round one on his return to Grand Slam action.

The third seed, who missed Wimbledon with tendonitis in both knees, powered to a 6-2 6-2 6-3 victory to set up a match against Germany's Nicolas Kiefer.

Wimbledon - Day 7 Wrap

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, In : Wimbledon
It was the most anticipated first sight of a ceiling since Michelangelo pulled back the covers on the Sistine Chapel. And as far as roofs go, the one over Centre Court that was used for the first time on Wimbledon Day 7 worked very well thank you. It kept the rain out.

It was not a torrential downpour that caused the roof to be closed, in fact by the time play had recommenced on Centre Court they were also playing on all the other, roofless, courts. But that’s beside the point.

The point ...

Wimbledon - Day 6 Wrap

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Sunday, June 28, 2009, In : Wimbledon

After a week of relative calm at Wimbledon, the storm clouds gathered ominously above the courts of the All England Club on middle Saturday. Despite rumblings of thunder in the distance there were no shocks today on Centre Court with Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Venus Williams all progressing comfortably to the fourth round.

Murray in particular was in fine form beating Viktor Troicki in straight sets and a little over 90 minutes. Murray has been keeping everyone amused with his 'Tennis pl...

Wimbledon - Day 4 Wrap

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Friday, June 26, 2009, In : Wimbledon
Andy Murray and Lleyton Hewitt have a lot in common. That both were victorious on Wimbledon Day 4 is just a minor thing. If Murray can become a Wimbledon winner like Hewitt, it would be a major thing.

Murray and Hewitt are the sole representatives in the men’s draw of Britain and Australia, respectively; two proud tennis nations with a shared history, both in the grip of a talent crunch.

They have been on the wrong side of public opinion in their homelands, they have said things when they we...

Wimbledon - Day 2 Wrap

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, In : Wimbledon
If not everything went to plan on day two of Wimbledon 2009, at least the weather followed the script and bathed the All England Club in warm summer sunshine and azure skies.

It was a day of tears for some, cheers for others - well done Andy Murray and Elena Baltacha - and, in that sense, was like every other day in the history of these Championships.

Tennis is a brutal sport and it does not get any less bruising just because it is played in surroundings which please the eye and remind ev...

Roland Garros - Day 1 Round-up

Posted by Sorrel Stewart on Monday, May 25, 2009, In : Roland Garros

British number three seed Andy Murray eased into the next round with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 win over Argentina's Juan Igancio Chela and a match-up against either Germany's Mischa Zverev or Potito Starace of Italy.

Murray, one of the few men capable of pouncing should four-time champion Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer slip-up, needed just an hour and 45 minutes to see off Chela, a former quarter-finalist whose ranking has slumped to 205.

"It was a very good win. Chela's a tough player. I needed to pl...
